The Normandy Region invites young people from all countries, aged 15 to 25, to elect the Freedom Prize winner online from March 9 to April 12, 2020. Loujain Al Hathloul, Father Pedro Opeka, Nasrin Sotoudeh were chosen for their exemplary fight for freedom from among 167 proposals received from around the world in the Normandy Region by this jury chaired by Emmanuel Davidenkoff of Le Monde.

An international jury made up of 24 young people of 13 different nationalities met at the Abbaye aux Dames, in Caen, on February 14 & 15, 2020 to select three personalities. Loujain Al Hathloul, Father Pedro Opeka, Nasrin Sotoudeh were chosen for their exemplary fight for freedom from among 167 proposals received from around the world in the Normandy Region by this jury chaired by Emmanuel Davidenkoff of Le Monde.

Loujain Al Hathloul - Saudi Arabia, 30 years old

Loujain Al-Hathloul is an emblematic figure of activism for women's rights in Saudi Arabia. Arrested for braving the ban on women driving a car, she is still imprisoned in very worrying conditions today.

The nomination of Loujain Al Hathloul was proposed by the young people of CIFAC in Caen and the Charles de Gaulle high school in Caen.

 

Father Pedro Opaka - Madagascar, 71 years old

For nearly 50 years, Father Pedro Opeka has been helping the poorest in Madagascar by supporting them, thanks to his association Akamasoa, in the construction of decent housing, schools or medical dispensaries.

The appointment of Father Pedro Opaka was proposed by a group of young Madagascans.

 

Nasrin Sotoudeh - Iran, 56

Nasrin Sotoudeh is an Iranian feminist and secular lawyer, notably against the legislation imposing the wearing of the hijab. After a first prison sentence between 2010 and 2012, she was sentenced in 2019 to 38 years' imprisonment and 148 lashes.

The nomination of Nasrin Sotoudeh was proposed by young people from the Lycées Saint Just in Lyon and Arcisse de Caumont in Bayeux.

The Freedom Prize will be awarded on June 3, 2020 at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen as part of the Normandy Peace Forum.

The winner will receive a check for 25,000 euros to defend their cause as well as a trophy in progress by the Lycée Napoléon de L’Aigle.
