Born of the will of the international community and a relative consensus within the African Union, in July 2011, South Sudan has in fact never managed to rid itself of its original sins. In the aftermath of its independence, South Sudan quickly turned into a theater of a bloody fratricidal civil war. Since the intensification of the fighting in December 2013, none of the peace agreements, the most recent in September 2018, have prevented the displacement of 2 million people and the exile in neighboring countries of 2.5 million south Sudanese. Today, the dismissal of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, against a backdrop of military coup and popular uprising, further weakens the peace process in southern Sudan. What will happen in Juba now, when the transition in Khartoum seems no more inclined than the African Union or more capable than the UN to re-commit itself firmly to stabilize the situation?
