Mr. Ousama Assed was born in Tripoli in 1965. He is married and a father of two boys. He holds a Bsc in Civil Engineering from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and an Msc in Structural Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

Mr. Assed’s late father Mohammed Otman Assed, was the Prime Minister of Libya under King Idris, from October 1960 to March 1963. During his premiership, the Libyan constitution was amended bringing an end to federalism in Libya. The Assed family was on holiday in Switzerland when Gaddafi’s coup took place in 1969. His father was banned from returning to Libya, sentenced to prison and all his property and goods were confiscated by the new regime. The Assed family was thereafter forced to live in exile in Morocco. Three of his brothers were assassinated by Gaddafi’s regime. In his time in Morocco, Mr. Assed has had a successful career as an engineer, including as the General Manager of TAPEC, a private company involved in major infrastructure projects in Morocco.

On March 4th, 2011, Mr. Assed and his brother Ahmed entered Benghazi and met Mustapha Abdeljalil (the former Chairman of the National Transition Council) to declare the family’s support to the revolution the Libyan people had started in the hope for a change towards democracy. On October 2011, Mr. Assed, his family and the friends who shared the same hopes and beliefs for a democratic, open, tolerant and stable Libya founded the Tripoli-based Al Mostakabal Association for Environment Protection and Sustainable Development (AMA).

On January 2012, after deep reflection and consultations with friends, intellectuals and colleagues, Mr. Assed founded the Libya Center for Strategic and Future Studies (LRCSFS). Since its creation, Mr. Assed has traveled extensively throughout Libya and the region to understand the sources of tension in the country and offer possible solutions. Through tireless and discreet work, Mr. Assed has established contacts and gained the trust of a wide range of political, economic, tribal, security and civil society actors throughout the country.
