Jean-Marie Guéhenno is now a professor at Columbia University (New York), where he directs the “Kent Program for Conflict Resolution”. He is also a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution, a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, president of the scientific board of the Institute of Advanced Studies in National Defence (IHEDN), and a member of the board of trustees of the Carnegie Corporation, of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and of the École Normale Supérieure. After starting his career at the French Court of Audit, Jean-Marie Guéhenno headed the Analysis and Forecasting Centre of the Quai d’Orsay and was ambassador to the Western European Union. He was the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations from 2000 to 2008, working for six years alongside Kofi Annan, for whom he served as assistant again in 2012 as Deputy Joint Special Envoy on Syria. He was president of the Commission White Paper on Defence and National Security in 2012–2013, and he directed the NGO International Crisis Group from 2014 to 2017. He is the author of several books: “Le Premier XXIe siècle, de la globalisation à l’émiettement” [The early 21st century: from globalisation to fragmentation], just published by Flammarion.
