Jean-Pierre Raffarin

 

He is President of the Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes from 1988 to 2002 and Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises, Commerce and Handicrafts in Alain Juppé's governments, between 1995 and 1997.

Member of the European Parliament then senator, he is appointed Prime Minister by President Jacques Chirac after the 2002 presidential election. At Matignon, he leads a policy of reforms and favors decentralization in particular. Suffering from an important unpopularity, he resigned after the referendum on the treaty establishing a constitution for Europe in 2005.

Re-elected Senator of the Vienne in September 2005, he is one of the eight Vice-Presidents of the Senate. In 2009, Jean-Pierre Raffarin is appointed Personal Representative of the President of the Republic for the Francophonie.

On June 27, 2017, he announces the renunciation of the three years of his remaining mandate, to devote himself to Leaders for Peace, an NGO to "warn about the risks of war". He left the presidency of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on July 11, 2017, and resigned as Senator on October 4, 2017.
