On 10 October 1981, France became the 35th state to officially abolish the death penalty. Some 40 years later, 149 countries have now taken the same path. Yet the practice still remains extremely common in some parts of the world. Capital punishment is a repressive, discriminatory practice that is also frequently used as a way to apply pressure between states. Why, in 2021, does the death penalty still exist in one-third of the world’s countries?
