Sonita Alizadeh, 25, a rapper born in Afghanistan committed against forced marriage, was named winner of this third edition of the Freedom Prize thanks to the votes of more than 5,000 young people from around the world. The award ceremony will take place on September 30 as part of the Normandy World Peace Forum in Caen. The Freedom Prize is an educational device to raise awareness of freedom, peace and human rights anchored in the values carried by the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944 in Normandy. It invites young people aged 15 to 25 in France and around the world to nominate each year a person or an organization engaged in an exemplary fight in favor of freedom.
The uniqueness of this system: involving young people at each of its stages, from the proposals submitted to the international jury until the final designation of the winner, but also for the design of the trophy awarded to the winner. ).
This year, the creation of the trophy was entrusted to the students of the First year in Sciences and Technologies of Design of Applied Arts and of the First year of the National Diploma of Crafts and Design of the Lycée Mezeray-Gabriel d'Argentan, but also to the students of BTS Développement Réalisation Bois of the Lycée Pierre Simon de Laplace de Caen for the realization. Their files had been selected following a call for projects for the realization of this trophy that they wanted to make in santos rosewood, a rare, precious and very hard wood!
To rough and polish the wood, it took: 40 hours of programming, 60 hours of testing, 40 hours of machining, and 1,800,000 lines of code for programming.
Despite the context of the health crisis, the various confinements and the multiple changes in work planning, the trophy was delivered to the Normandy Region on the scheduled date. It will be offered to Sonita Alizadeh on September 30 at the Normandy For Peace World Forum.
