Perceptions of Qatar are often limited to its immense wealth derived from gas and its links to dubious organisations. However, for several years, Qatar has been trying to improve its “villainous” image. For example, it is developing small state diplomacy in seeking to find a role as a mediator by hosting negotiations on Afghanistan and Chad and more recently between Israel and Hamas. 

Will this be enough to increase its standing in a very volatile Middle East?
