Brijlal Chaudhari is an Indigenous Tharu nation from the foothills of the Himalayas where the Rhinos and the Elephants used to roam freely. Raised in a multi-generational Tharu family, he carries his ancestors’ oral teachings of relationships, leadership, compassion, storytelling, diplomacy, reciprocity, customary law, governance, Indigenous economics, and resource management. He is Indigenous Peoples’ rights activist and has over 15 years of experience leading social change programs and organizations. He represents Indigenous Peoples of Asia Region as a steering committee member of the Coalition on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He strongly believes that Indigenous worldviews and their knowledge systems should co-exist with the others not as competitors but as collaborators and equal partners. Hence, he founded Global Home for Indigenous Peoples (GH4IP) that promotes and advocates for the rights of Indigenous Peoples and their way of life. Most recently, he spoke at Change NOW Summit 2023 in Paris to highlight the contribution of Indigenous Peoples as the climate leaders and to ensure that their rights to self-determination, right to free, prior, and informed consent, and right to their territories and natural resources are respected as the world is transitioning into green technologies.
