Iryna Tsilyk

IRYNA TSILYK (born 1982) is a Ukrainian film director and writer. The director of the award-winning documentary film "The Earth is Blue as an Orange", which received the award for the best director at the Sundance Film Festival 2020, as well as many other honors. Tsilyk is also the director of the fiction film "Rock. Paper. Grenade" based on the novel "Who Are You?" by Ukrainian writer and Iryna's husband Artem Chekh.

Moreover, Iryna Tsylyk is the author of 8 books (poetry, prose, children's editions), including "Depth of Field", "Red Marks on Black" and others. Her various poems and short stories have been translated into multiple languages and published in a number of international literary magazines and anthologies.

During Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine, Tsilyk also is active on a field of cultural diplomacy. Futhermore, she has been writing columns and essays for various international publications, including Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (Germany), Weekendavisen (Denmark), Dwytygodnik (Poland), and others. Several of Tsilyk's essays were included in the recent collection "Ukraine 22", published by Penguin Random House (2023). Iryna's essay "Another Life" became part of a fundraising project in collaboration with the American photographer Jim Goldberg (2022). Another essay, "Ouroboros Path," was included in a book about the Swiss artist Miriam Kahn which reflects on the nature of violence (2023).
