Richard Werly

Richard Werly is a Franco-Swiss journalist and essayist, specializing in political and social issues. He has been the correspondent for France and Europe for the Swiss daily Blick since May 2022. He is a member of the Caux Forum on Human Security and Democracy (Switzerland). He obtained his first journalist position at the end of his studies at the daily La Croix. 

In 1990, he moved to Thailand, where he worked as a freelancer for Swissinfo, RTS, and the Journal de Genève. Returning to Paris in 1996, he became a reporter for the weekly La Vie and then for Libération. He joined Le Temps at the end of the 1990s and covered armed conflicts in Cambodia and Burma. In 2000, he was appointed permanent correspondent for Libération and Le Temps in Japan, based in Tokyo. He returned to Geneva in 2003, where he covered the Iraq war and the 2004 tsunami for Le Temps. He was then appointed head of the international section of the Swiss newspaper. In 2006, he became the Brussels correspondent, responsible for covering European news, and then the Paris correspondent from 2014. 

He joined the Swiss daily Blick in May 2022, for which he publishes a free weekly newsletter on France, titled Republick. He is also a regular guest on the on-demand audio show Le Nouvel Esprit Public, presented by Philippe Meyer, regularly appears on Arte, and writes columns for the parliamentary channel LCP. 

In 2022, he launched the on-demand audio service “Comment va la France?” on the Le Temps website. He received the Jean-Dumur Prize in 2020. On March 22, 2022, he was decorated as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by Roselyne Bachelot, then French Minister of Culture. He is the co-founder and director of the collection “L’âme des peuples” at Nevicata editions.
