Jean-Louis Bourlanges

A graduate in literature and an alumnus of the ENA, Jean-Louis Bourlanges is a former Member of the European Parliament, a former Member of the French National Assembly and former Chair of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

Elected as a councillor for Dieppe in 1983 and then as a regional councillor for Upper Normandy in 1986, Jean-Louis Bourlanges became a Member of the European Parliament in 1989 on the list headed by Simone Veil. In the European Parliament in Strasbourg, he held various posts, including Chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, General Rapporteur for the Budget and, in 2004, Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties. As a member and later chair of the Joint Committee of the European Parliament and the Polish Sejm, he played a key role in Poland’s integration into the European Union.

Jean-Louis Bourlanges was elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 as MP for the 12th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine. He chaired the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee until 2024.

A member of the editorial board of Commentaire, he regularly writes articles on political analysis. He also appears on the programme Le Nouvel Esprit Public. A man of letters, he has written numerous books on European issues and French political life.
