Emmanuel Ortiz

 

Emmanuel Ortiz born in Argentina in 1961, grow-up in the context of the repression and dictature, he arrived in France in 1978.  As french, spend his Military Service in Germany as troubles break-up in Poland with Solidarnosk (Lesh Walesa) in 1980. Back to Paris, he began his passion for photography, covering demonstrations, musicians of Tango and Jazz. 

In 1984 he went to Peru and worked as a stringer for Reuter’s; Peru is then struggling with the actions of the Shining Path and the guevarist guerrilla of the MRTA.   From there, he covered the elections and massive hunger strikes in Bolivia in 85 and 86. He will keep traveling from Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina where the last intents of coup fail, but put Democracy in danger.

In 1991, he went to Croatia to work on the beginning of the war in the Balkans. He will cover Slavonia, Vukovar, and then Herzegovina with the first fights in Mostar, under siege.   Get set up in Sarajevo until 1996, covering from there the enclave of Bihac, the siege of Mostar, central Bosnia until the Dayton agreement and the first pictures of the massacre of Srebrenica in the hills surrounding the city. 

He will then cover the refugees escaping from Kosovo to Albania in 1998 as the world is busy with the football world cup.   Then, the Republic of Macedonia will have to build huge camps to deal with a massive arrival of refugees from Kosovo. In 1999, cover Kosovo under control of NATO and declare its independence.

In 2000, fly to Thailand and make some incursions in Myanmar to work on the Karen National Army and the Shan state Army.   Live in Normandy since 2005 and work on environment issues as the oil slick of the Prestige in Spain, Chaitén Volcano in Patagonia, and the Tsunami in Japan in 2011.
