Jean-Christophe Rufin is a doctor who has worked in the humanitarian sector and has held several high-level positions abroad, including that of French ambassador to Senegal.
Inspired by his international experience and interested in the crossroads of civilisations, his literary work focuses on two different spheres. With L’Abyssin, his first novel published in 1997, Rouge Brésil, which was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 2001, and Le Grand Cœur, which enjoyed widespread success, he explores historical settings, always with a nod to current issues.
With Globalia, Le parfum d’Adam, Katiba, Immortelle randonnée (on the Camino de Santiago) and Check-point, Jean-Christophe Rufin creates contemporary fictional worlds which examine our world’s evolution.
With his lively style, Jean-Christophe Rufin’s novels are exciting and humorous and have won him legions of fans, both in France and internationally.
He was appointed to the French Academy in 2008.
