Shadow Minister of international relations and cooperation

At 23 years old, Darren Bergman became the youngest member of the Johannesburg Council. He had held various positions in both the Democratic Party and Democratic Alliance youth before entering Council at the pinnacle of his youth career as the National Youth Chairman.

In Council, Darren served as a whip and convenor on Municipal Enterprises before taking up the position as spokesperson on Safety for the DA in Johannesburg.

Darren became the director of communications before being elected the head of strategy for the DA Johannesburg serving on their management team.

In 2011 Darren challenged the ANC (the ruling party) in one of their strongholds joining an elite team of politicians that have taken a ward away from the them. This gave Darren a transitional development from career party politician to a community activist.

In 2014 Darren was elected to Parliament and was given the shadow deputy minister position in Sports and recreation. In 2015 Darren also took up position as an alternate on the international relations and co-operation portfolio. Having an interest in conflict resolution and eyeing key regions such as the Middle East and Morocco it was in this portfolio that the diplomacy seed was nurtured as he became a treasurer for the Africa Liberal Network and involved in SADC.

With the philosophy of not just being active but productive too, Darren has been a policeman, paramedic, strategic consultant, hotel and food critic, director of operations and a financial advisor. He was the co-founder of Youth Against Crime which ran a successful high-level campaign for years. He has a master’s in Public Administration.
