Nicolas Hulot is most well known for his television programmes. Although this experience was only meant to last a few months, he ended up working in television for much longer. For 25 years, Nicolas Hulot was the producer and then the presenter of Ushuaïa, le magazine de l’Extrême (1987-1995), Opération Okavango (1996-1997) and Ushuaïa Nature (1998-2012).
He works to protect the environment and to raise public awareness of environmental issues; in 1990, Nicolas Hulot created the Fondation Ushuaïa, which then became the Fondation Nicolas-Hulot pour la nature et l’homme. 
He co-wrote the 2009 film Le Syndrome du Titanic, which sought to raise awareness of the climate emergency.
In December 2012, he was appointed the Special Envoy of the President of the Republic for the Protection of the Planet, a voluntary role. In this role, he took an active part in COP 21 in Paris in December 2015.
In May 2017, he was appointed French Minister of State as the Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition in Édouard Philippe’s government. He chose to resign from this role at the end of August 2018.
On 30 January 2019, he became the honorary president of his foundation.
