Akere Muna

 

Akere T. Muna is the founder and former President of Transparency International (TI) Cameroon.  Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1978, he is a lawyer by training.

In 2007-2008, he was appointed member of the independent High-Level Audit Panel of the African Union.  From 2008 to 2014, he was elected President of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC). In 2010, he was elected for a 4-year term to the Panel of Eminent Persons, which oversees the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). He later became the Chairperson of this panel until 2014. 

In 2013, he was appointed as the the first ever Sanctions Commissioner of the African Development Bank. He has served on several national commissions on legal reform and curbing corruption. He has been a consultant for the World Bank, and many other International Institutions like the International Monetary Fund. He was actively involved in the TI working group that helped draft the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption and authored a guide to the Convention.  He was Vice-Chair of Transparency International’s Board from 2005 until 2014 and then served as Chair of the Council of the International AntiCorruption Conference (IACC) for six years. In 2017 he was appointed Chairperson of the Board of Directors of ECOBANK Cameroon and was named Chairperson of the inaugural Vetting Panel of three by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).  In October 2017, Mr.Muna resigned from his positions within ECOBANK Cameroon and the IACC. In March 2018, he resigned from his position at the African Development Bank, all after announcing his intention to run for the office of President of the Republic of Cameroon in the elections scheduled for October 2018.  Mr. Muna is a member of the Governing Board of the Africa Governance Institute and serves, since 2013, as a member of the High-Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa.
