Since the 2011 civil war and the NATO military intervention, Libya has become the stage on which multiple competing interests play out. The conflict, which intensified once again in 2019 with the offensive launched by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, involves a wide range of external powers. And it demonstrates, all too tragically, the strategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean. At a time when mediation attempts by the regional and international communities offer a glimmer of hope, the forthcoming elections in December 2021 offer a real prospect of a return to peace and stability.
