Joe Biden was sworn in as US president on 20 January with his predecessor, Donald Trump, still refusing to concede defeat. The new president immediately set about delivering on his new agenda: Build Back Better. The challenges has faces are immense. At home, he needs to revive an economy decimated by the pandemic and reconcile a deeply polarised society. And abroad, he needs to rally his allies behind the United States in order to face down the threat from China and stop Beijing gaining technological supremacy.
