On 4 August 2020, an explosion rocked the centre of Beirut, leading to the collapse of the government and causing further damage to an already fragile economy. The disaster revealed a Lebanese state on its knees amid growing calls for an end to corruption and an overhaul of the system and the political class. As the country lies in ruins, the challenges ahead are enormous: to put an end to violence, to restore trust, to manage an economic crisis and to enable the Lebanese people – in all their diversity – to live together in peace.
