Serge Stroobants is the Director for Europe and MENA and Global Director for Security, Defence and Intelligence at the Institute for Economics and Peace. His academic focus is on political science, international relations, security and defence, global risk analysis, forecasting and crisis management. He is a graduate of the Royal Military School of Belgium, the Free University of Brussels, the University Jean Moulin Lyon III (France), the Führungsakademie of the Bundeswehr and the Vesalius College in Brussels. He is a former senior officer in the Belgian army and now runs BANTS Consulting, his own strategic security consultancy, focusing on OSINT and cybersecurity.
He is a visiting professor at the Riga Graduate School of Law, the Trocadero Forum Institute in Paris, the Blanquerna University in Barcelona and the Brussels School of Governance, teaching courses on peace, security, development, global terrorism and radicalisation. He is a specialist in international terrorism and radicalisation and has made numerous appearances at conferences and in the media regarding these topics. He was an expert in parliamentary committees concerning the impact of terrorism in France after the Paris attacks of 13 November 2015 and in Belgium after the Brussels attacks of 22 March 2016. He is involved in supporting victims of terrorism.
He is a visiting scholar at the Irish College of KU Leuven and the Global Governance Institute, and an associate at the European Institute for Asian Studies and the Global Institute for Cybersecurity Technologies.
He is an alumnus of the US State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program.
Serge's native languages are French and Dutch, and he is fluent in English and German.
