Plénière

Whenever and wherever women and men have dared to stand up to injustice, they have been at risk. Their resistance is an aggravation to those involved in abuse, corruption and crime, particularly those in white-collar roles. The latter have vast financial resources or are at the top of the social ladder, so have access to powerful levers and back-up.

The defenders of rights and freedoms have faced this cynicism and impunity with courage and determination. Despite intimidation, pressure and attacks, they persist, do not give up and expand their efforts. This desire to see the fight to the end, despite the sometimes immense risks involved, commands admiration.

This plenary session will explore the work of humanitarians, journalists, environmentalists, lawyers and protectors of whistleblowers, as well as human rights activists.

They are the Defenders of Freedom and, now more than ever, they are targets. Because they sometimes pay for their unfailing commitment with their lives, it is urgent that we, as citizens of the world, ask ourselves how we can better protect them and support their struggle.
